WHAT’S NEW FOR 2017?
A SLIGHTLY NEW FORMAT
The format for 2017 builds on the already proven 2016 formula: great sailing + beautiful tropical islands,+ good food + lots of fun. Once again we are sailing from Batam’s Nongsa Point Marina to the Equator to give newcomers the experience of “Crossing the line” with stopovers at Fish Head Island on the journey south and a new destination, Benan, on the trip north. Neptune is a special event. Now in its 7
year, it is an adventure for all classes of sailing and power boats
The Hosts at Fish Head are promising an even bigger party than last year. Encouraged by the good behaviour of the fleet who descended on the small island in the 2016 event, they are planning new accommodation for those staying on the land, improved access to and from the anchorage. If conditions are anywhere near those from the last regatta, day 1 will be a real test of stamina on all fronts.
Neptune Island itself continues to be a very special destination and our recent visit confirmed that everything is in order for our return next Chinese New Year. The beach is as beautiful as ever and the sunsets as spectacular. The all-tide landing dock will be bigger and easier to access.
MC Richard “Cannonball” Gillam promises to be back to rock the Neptune Bar courtesy of Mount Gay Rum (recently dubbed the “best bar in Asia for 4 days a year”) and we are commissioning more huts on the quieter side of the island for those needing rest.
On the return journey, the village of Benan, with its sheltered anchorage, accessible pier, restaurants and resort accommodation will provide a new experience, and a much needed shower, for all.
We start sailing on Sunday 29
January to give us 4 nights on Neptune and the 2 stopovers. With a bigger fleet expected next year the drive has already started to recruit more support boats and crews.
The popularity of the Neptune Regatta continues to grow. We have a solid following of local and regional boats with crews flying in from as far away as Canada and Russia to participate. We have charter boats available for those that get in early, It is definitely on again and 2017 will be the best yet.
A NEW CLASS OF COMPETITORS – THE OCEAN CANOEISTS
These crazy fools race a 12man crew for a 6man outrigger canoe, so how does that work?? “Sea Changes”. Each canoe will have an accompanying support boat. At predetermined times/distances/positions (depending on the team’s race strategy) the crew swaps over… and in full race mode, this is done without the canoe missing a single stroke. The speed of these craft matches the speed of the cruising class yachts in the right conditions and the courses are the same. The party just gets bigger!
