WHAT’S NEW FOR 2016?
A SLIGHTLY NEW FORMAT
Last year’s experiment with Fish Head Island worked well and will be included again next year. Not only did the addition of a well-run, well presented venue prove popular as a first night stopover, but the change in course to Fish Head gave the multihull fleet some of the best sailing seen in these waters. The front runners saw speeds of 17 to 18 knots in the lively NE Monsoon winds. I think we need a faster committee boat.
A NEW PASSAGE RACE
For the 2016 event there is a new 75 mile race to Fish Head around the north side of Bintan. With wind and seas from the northeast during the peak of the monsoon, we are expecting some very lively sailing for the IRC 1 and Premier Cruising fleets. Cruising, multihull and the smaller IRC classes will continue racing last year’s format.
There is also an extra day’s sailing added to the program. Due to popular demand, the first race will depart from Nongsa on the Sunday morning rather than Monday. That puts pressure on organisers and crew to get ready a day earlier, but the rewards are an extra day down on the beautiful Neptune Island and more great sailing for all.
MORE POWER BOATS
The addition of the power boat fleet in 2015 proved very successful and will be back again next year with RYA Ocean Master Trainer George McCreedy putting the power boat skippers and crews through their paces again.
A NEW CLASS FOR SAILING BOATS – THE RALLY CLASS.
We have had interest from a number of people who want to come along but not race. So VOILA, we are introducing the RALLY Class. Follow the same route, stay at the same places, enjoy the comfort and confidence of being part of the fleet, but non competitive from a racing perspective.
NEW ALL TIDE LANDING FACILITY
One significant improvement for 2016 will be the new all-tide landing facility for the island. Crews will be able to get on and off the island at low tide far easier than in previous years. This will be welcome news to those who like to while away the evenings in the Island Bar.
